about

Stromatolites are the oldest type of fossils on Earth. Some stromatolites have been around for billions of years. Stromatolites build up as sediment gradually piles up, layer upon layer, year after year.

The songs on this album are musical stromatolites. The basic tracks were started as far back as 2006, and gradually over the course of 17 years, new layers of sound accumulated, causing the songs to build up over time in unexpected ways. All kinds of experiences, good and bad, got trapped in the layers as they piled up.

But what are these songs actually about? There are multiple interpretations that are equally valid. One clue is the observatory on the cover. Working all night in an observatory makes your coffee-addled mind start to wander. This album tells the story of one particular night in an observatory, from sunset to sunrise.

But hey, that’s just one interpretation. Let your mind wander and see where these songs take you.

Special thanks to my friends for tolerating all my “demos” over the years and providing helpful feedback, my family for tolerating me working on these songs for, let’s be honest, way too many hours, and an extra special thank you to my musical mentor, the late great Jerry Grindstaff, who introduced me to a seemingly infinite amount of amazing music over the last 20 years. This album is dedicated to the memory of Jerry.
